Al Mathana de Rami Kodeih

Ali and Kamal are two close cousins despite their opposed personalities. Ali is a dreamer and Kamal is a macho. They go to spend one day in the nature near an abandoned mill in their native South Lebanon. During their trip, their rapport de force slowly unfolds.

LFF 2010 : Domaine

Patric Chiha est né en 1975 à Vienne en Autriche. Après la réalisation de plusieurs courts et moyens-métrages, et documentaires (dont HOME, OÙ SE TROUVE LE CHEF DE LA PRISON ? et LES MESSIEURS) sélectionnés dans de nombreux festivals, il réalise en 2009 son premier long-métrage, DOMAINE, avec Béatrice Dalle et Isaïe Sultan.

Why did you submit your film to this particular festival ?

I've already shown two films at the festival, "Casa Ugalde" and "Home". So, I know the festival and the people who run it and I like them very much. Even if DOMAINE has no Lebanese subject, I am very happy to show my latest film there. My father is Lebanese, so it touches me a lot to show my films in Beirut.

"Domaine" is your first feature film. How was the shooting ?

For me every film is a film. A short film is also a film. Of course, a feature film requires more time, but in reality it changes nothing.

Somehow, I was very lucky. I dreamed of making this film about the relationship between a woman who says goodbye to the world and a boy who discovers it. And I was free to shoot it as I thought. The producer, the cast and the crew followed me and I could give the movie the shape, which seemed the most right to me. That was very important, because I think that emotion on film has especially to do with shape.

How did you come to choose Beatrice Dalle ?

I don't like the idea of typecasting or casting against type. I simply had a strong desire to film Béatrice Dalle and I wrote the script for her. Before meeting her, I sensed her gentleness and violence were very similar to Nadia's. I was fascinated by her in the way Pierre (Isaïe Sultan) is fascinated by Nadia. The first time I met her, I was waiting for her in a café. She came in and stood smack in the middle of the room, straight as an arrow, between two columns, and I knew that was the film right there. Something about her speaks to me of time, maybe it's this strange impression I get that she has none: no past, no present, no future. I think she immediately understood that's what I was looking for: a violent detachment. It's contradictory, and it truly defines her.

What’s next ?

Currently, I am writing and preparing this new movie, « The dead soldiers », which I will shoot next year in Lebanon and France. The film tells the story of a militiaman who, in 1975, after having killed his prisoner without proper reason, fled Lebanon. 35 years later, he meets in France a young man who looks exactly like his prisoner. The repressed guilt will then resurface and he understands why he killed the prisoner. I will shoot this film in the Lebanese mountains and in the French region Les Landes. I am very excited about shooting in Lebanon.

Pierre pense pouvoir l’aider, la retenir…

Vulnérable de Reine Mitri

Chronique d’angoisse, chronique de violence, histoires de départ, histoires de défaite, et au milieu du chaos, la musique et le cinéma. « Vulnérable » est ma chronique du Liban de 2006 à 2008. Pendant trois ans j’ai filmé dans mon espace intime, sur l’écran de télé, une violence au quotidien, et sur l’écran de montage, un autre film qui est resté suspendu - celui sur la guerre de juillet 2006. J’ai aussi filmé mes amis ; ceux qui ont quitté le pays et ceux qui y sont restés. Tout au long, des questions se sont posées : quel espace reste-t-il pour la liberté de l’individu, pour l’espoir, la créativité et l’amour ? Le bonheur individuel peut-il exister au milieu du malheur collectif ? Comment vivre avec la défaite ?

Beirut Skinhead Movement by Khaled Ramadan and Joanne Nucho

This investigational documentary is not a scientific production by any means. It is built up around street gossips about a natural phenomenon visible in the streets of Beirut. In our quest for an explanation to why the majority of men in the city of Beirut lose their hair early in life, we discover that people are aware of the problem, but no one really knows why it exists. The phenomenon itself is no longer at question since almost all men in Beirut are without hair or in the process of losing it. While searching for an explanation to the growing number of bald heads, we learned much about the different hypotheses, and the terms used on the street for bald people or skinheads. Ajlah, Aslaa, Aqraa, Ahlat and Zalabita all means head without hair - a bald head.

Don’t miss the opportunity to win the Bank Audi Best Film Award 2010!

If you have not sent your work yet to ..né.à Beyrouth, we invite you to do so before 16th July 2010.

Genres open for submission are: short, documentary, experimental, animation, feature length and this year we are also including video clips and viral videos.

The Bank Audi Best Film Award 2010 will be presented to Lebanese filmmakers from the Festival’s selection for outstanding films, all categories taken together:

- 1st Prize: 3000$ + Trophy

- 2nd Prize: 1500$ + Trophy

- Best ‘first film’: Trophy

The Festival will be held at the Empire Sofil from 19th – 23rd August 2010.

Du 19 au 23 août, ..né.à Beyrouth et Bank Audi vous donnent rendez-vous pour la 9ème édition du Festival du Film Libanais.

Entretien avec Pierre Sarraf, créateur et responsable de la production ..né.à beyrouth autour de l'organisation d'un festival de cinéma à Doha, et de la situation cinématographique libanaise.




A quel point l’organisation d’un tel évènement est importante pour le monde arabe ?

L’organisation d’un tel festival est important pour notre region car il permet de créer de nouvelles opportunités de rencontre et d’échanges au niveau des professionnels du cinéma ouvrant ainsi plus de portes pour la production de film arabe. Les manifestations de qualité de ce genre permettent aux jeunes et moins jeunes cinéastes d'être diffusés, de se faire connaître, de trouver des partenaires.

Pourquoi selon vous, un tel évènement ne serait pas organisé à Beyrouth, capitale culturelle par excellence ?

A Beyrouth il existe déjà plusieurs festivals de cinema de qualité, chacun touchant une niche bien définie. Né a Beyrouth par exemple a pour objectif de promouvoir la production cinematographique locale. Ce festival est une plateforme permettant aux realisateurs libanais de montrer leurs oeuvres et de rencontrer leur public.

Pour préparer un Festival comme celui de Doha, il faut avoir un budget à la hauteur des ambitions de l’évènement et notamment une véritable volonté politique. Malheureusement nous manquons ici de l’un et de l’autre. Le Qatar est en plein essor, ils ont meme fait construire un théâtre pour l’occasion.
Enfin l’instabilité du pays rend ces evenements internationaux, de ce niveau, quasi impossible a organiser chez nous. Comment voulez-vous acceuillir autant de grandes figures du cinema et un public regional et international entre deux attentats et 3 guerres.


Que pensez-vous de l’industrie du cinéma au Liban en particulier ainsi qu’au monde arabe en général ?

Hormis l’Egypte et le Maroc, l’industrie cinematographique libanaise est une des plus dynamique de la region. Elle se porte de mieux en mieux avec un nombre grandissant de production de long metrage, un parc de cameras et de materiel de qualite, des techniciens, des producteurs et des acteurs professionnels. Ce qui manque cruellement ce sont de bons scenarios, du financement et une politique etatique encourageant le cinema. La distribution est a la traine egalement avec une predominance des films commerciaux en salle et des televisions locales bien trop occupes par les debats politiques de plus de 180 minutes.

Ce qu’il faut c’est unir nos efforts et coproduire au niveau du monde arabe, créer des fonds regionaux d’aide au cinema, impliquer les televisions dans la production de films, et investir dans les nouvelles technologies de distribution liees a internet. C’est deja un peu le cas grace aux festivals de Dubai, Abu Dhabi et bientôt celui de Qatar.
