The artist imitates a succession of profile pictures of Facebook users in a reflection on the social networking site as a breeding ground for narcissism. With its audio track evolving from bomb sounds to entertaining J-pop, the piece evokes an evolution from harsh reality to denial.

Who is the boss? The director, thinking and self-assured or the camera, a mindless machine? A power struggle with unexpected results.

The video presents an encounter between a self-conscious being and a non-self-conscious object, whereby the director is engaged in a struggle with the camera in order to enslave it, only to find that this does not give him the expected control over the machine.

A vision of the city of Beirut at a crucial moment of transition from war to peace that draws the observer into a quasi-physical engagement.

This installation presents a vision of a city at a crucial moment of transition. Four videos, each of which presents images from the centre of Beirut in the early 1990s, convey the impression of a panoramic view of the streets of Beirut as the city seems to hold its breath and regain its strength after the end of the Civil War. Located somewhere between fantasy and reality, real and virtual, the images move in an interaction between past and present and draw the observer into an almost physical engagement.

A memorable phone call between the Syrian cosmonaut Muhammed Faris (part of a Russian space mission) and the late president Hafez al-Assad.

In a face-to-face encounter between a PVM monitor and a pocket projector, the installation combines archival images, images from the current Syrian uprising and constructed images. Two moments in the history of contemporary Syria that echo the situation across all Arab countries: a memorable phone call between the Syrian cosmonaut Muhammed Faris, who was part of the Russian mission to the Mir Space Station, and the late president Hafez al-Assad, and the removal of the statue of Assad by the Syrian government to prevent its destruction by the demonstrators.

" The Three Disappearances of Soad Hosni"

A rapturous elegy to a rich and versatile era of film production in Egypt through the work of one of its most revered stars, Soad Hosni, an exceptional artist...

The Egyptian Soad Hosni was born in 1943 and committed suicide in 2001. Hosni, one of the most celebrated Arab actresses, played in 82 features. Rania Stephan reconstructed her life, just using fragments on VHS films in which Hosni was a shining star.
The film is divided into three acts, a prologue and epilogue, and not only tells the life story of the versatile film star, but also of Egyptian cinema and society. In the first part, we see the actress sing and dance and a cheerful gathering of boys, girls and family. In the second part, we see Hosni - who in reality had countless affairs - as a desirable woman in sometimes complex relationships. Act three runs parallel to a change in the mood of society: there is violence against and oppression of women.
It isn’t only the body of Hosni that disappeared; this form of cinema and VHS as a medium also disappeared - three disappearances.

In early 2011, the filmmaker set out together with a friend to undertake a commissioned project to follow in the footsteps of James Bruce and document the Nile river from Alexandria to Aswan, but he got caught up in the events of the Egyptian revolution.

EAVE Film Finance Forum 2012 takes place during April 19-22 in Luxembourg. It is an intensive four day workshop for European and international professionals on European film finance.

The EAVE Film Finance Forum provides an exploration and update of the latest financial developments and funding sources in Europe. It includes sessions on public and private finance, co-production, tax incentives, the sales and distribution market, banking services and new industry trends. Since most films produced in Europe are made with low to medium budgets, the Finance Forum will focus on its participants' real financial situation and provide them with solutions adapted to their needs and projects.

How does it work?

The workshop takes the form of an inclusive round table with presentations on various up-to-date topics followed by open discussion with the participants and leading industry experts from the finance and film businesses. In order to achieve a maximum level of interactivity the total number of participants is limited. This enables an approach focused on a small group and the specific needs of each participant as well as facilitating networking between participants and experts.

Leading European experts
The Film Finance Forum's team is composed of leading experts (subject to change). The 2011 edition included: Christian Kmiotek (Head of Studies, Film Finance Forum & CFO, Samsa Film), Christophe Bruncher(Les Films de la Butte), Carl Clifton (K5 International), Maud Leclair (BNP Paribas), Joëlle Levie (OLFFI), Stefan Rüll (Rüll Law Office) and Bernhard Stampfer (BS Media Finance Advisory).

Who can apply?

The Film Finance Forum is targeted to producers and associated film industry professionals, members of the financial and legal communities, policy makers, and consultants. It is also open to non-EU applicants, thanks to the support of MEDIA Mundus.

The selection of the candidates is based on the application file submitted by each applicant according to the form provided. EAVE evaluates the quality of the candidate's company, his/her and the company's track record and the level of professional background of the candidate(s). On the occasion of the International Film Festival Rotterdam Festival, the Hubert Bals Fund is preparing to bring together the reprentatives of the South’s different film funds based in Europe. This meeting aims to harmonise the procedures and to facilitate access to information for beneficiaries. It is taking place in a context of a spectacular fall in amounts allocated. 2011 has in fact been a year of financial scarcity in the course of which the sum total granted by the seven main participating funds has fallen by almost a third compared to the previous year.

Developed by Wide with the support of the MEDIA Mundus program, and bringing together more than 70 international partners (including 40 festivals and 30 distributors) Eye on Films (EoF) aims to implement a selection of a dozen of recent films per year, 1st or 2nd feature films (fiction, animation, long-length documentaries), never screened nor released outside their country of origin. Imagenation’s vice president of development Daniela Tully is leaving the company after three years in the company.
Daniela Tully joined Imagenation in June 2009 and has since produced two feature films, Nawaf al-Janahi’s “Sea Shadow”, which is hitting the US with its international premier at Palm Springs International Film Festival, and Tobe Hooper’s horror thriller “Djinn”.

Tully has also headed up the Content Divisions for Imagenation’s joint ventures with Participant Media and National Geographic Films, through which the company has been involved in projects such as “The Crazies”, “Fair Game” and “The Help”.
Prior to joining Imagenation, Tully worked as a senior network executive of original productions at ProSieben, one of Germany’s private networks. Tully holds an MA in Media Science/Communications, American, Spanish and Latin American Literature and Linguistics, with an emphasis in Film.
Imagenation has carried out executive shake-ups in last months. CEO Ed Borgerding left the Abu Dhabi-based film fund last February while COO Stefan Brunner exited shortly before that.

Their love story lasts 10 days, fuelled by their fears and desires, by intrigue and violence. “Beirut Hotel” is a romance constantly on edge, similar to the country in which the story is set, vacillating between war and peace, where the only certainty is the uncertain.

For the fourth time in 2012 and after the great success in 2011, Ties That Bind - EAVE Asia-Europe Producers Workshop will be organised again in 2012 in partnership with FVG Audiovisual Fund, EAVE, Udine Fareast Film Festival and Busan International Film Festival / Asian Project Market.

Ties That Bind 2011 will consist of two workshops, workshop 1 taking place in Udine (Italy) between April 22-26, 2012 within the framework of the Udine Far East Film Festival (April 20-28, 2012) and workshop 2 being organized in October 8-11, 2012 during the Busan International Film Festival (October 4-13, 2012) in South Korea.

The workshops will bring together 10 film producers from Asian and European countries. Each producer will be selected together with a feature film project in development and will work with leading industry experts from both continents during the two workshops. Amongst a range of issues, sessions will focus on script development, co-production between Asia and Europe, financing in the two regions, marketing and promotion, and the legal aspects of co-production. The workshop participants will work together as a group, as well as through individual consultation, and will have the unusual opportunity to get to know each other very well with the object of forming long term creative and business partnerships and networks. The programme will culminate in Busan in October 2012 with meetings between the participants and leading Asian and European funders and sales agents during the Asian Project Market.

The workshop will enable feature film producers from both continents to work together in two four-day workshops.

Winter 2012 Feature-film Production Grants

San Francisco, CA - January 4, 2012 - In its continuing effort to promote original filmmaking by individuals from around the world, the Global Film Initiative is pleased to announce the Winter 2012 cycle of its feature-film production grants program. Applications will be accepted until January 16, 2012, and decisions will be announced in March 2012.

Global Film Initiative production grants are awarded twice a year, in winter and summer, to filmmakers whose work exhibits artistic excellence, accomplished storytelling and cultural perspective on daily life. Funds received through the Initiative's Granting Program are used to support completion of film production, and to subsidize post-production costs, such as laboratory and sound mixing fees, and access to modern editing systems.

The Global Film Initiative will award production grants of up to $10,000 each to select applicants during its winter granting cycle. These funds are made available following the Initiative's evaluation of an applicant's completed screenplay and early film-footage, and may include a pre-sale option for exclusive U.S. distribution of an applicant's film by the Initiative.

Individuals may submit more than one film for consideration per granting cycle but please note that only applications from qualifying countries or regions will be considered and that production grants are not available for documentary or short films.*

Que les textes de loi qui soi-disant la fondent soient périmés ou pas, ou que la Sûreté générale la pratique avec « les meilleures intentions du monde », ne sont que des questions subsidiaires dans le débat sur la censure. Dénoncer cette pratique, c’est d’abord définir l’intérêt public – devenu prétexte d’empiètement sur la liberté d’expression –comme le corollaire du bonheur individuel et de la vitalité sociale.
Dans la salle du cinéma Métropolis (Sofil), à l’atmosphère feutrée, aux nuances bordeaux usées par les milliers de sélections projetées sur l’écran, des figures culturelles et médiatiques ont présenté hier un projet de loi sur la liberté des travaux cinématographiques.

Cette démarche est le fruit d’un travail commun entre le groupement de L’observatoire de la censure, créé pour revoir et réformer les lois de la censure au Liban, et l’association Maharat(ou talents), qui consacre son action à la liberté d’expression. Sans vouloir s’en prendre à la SG ni prôner l’anarchie, les intervenants ont expliqué les fondements du texte proposé, assis sur des fauteuils art déco en cuir moutarde, sur la plate-forme devenue symbole de la fermentation artistique. « Nous sommes contre la censure en tant qu’interdiction imposée par la SG avec comme critère sa seule volonté ; ce que nous voulons c’est un contrôle pris en charge par le pouvoir judiciaire, sous l’égide de la loi », explique l’avocat et activiste Nizar Saghiyé. Fondateur du centre al-Moufakkira al-Kanouniya(l’Agenda juridique), il a corédigé, avec Nayla Geagea et Rana Saghiyé, un rapport sur « les actes de censure dans les textes de loi », publié avec le projet de loi sur la liberté des travaux cinématographiques. Ce que ce projet prévoit donc, c’est une voie judiciaire pour ceux qui s’estiment lésés par une production cinématographique. Il établit ainsi un mécanisme de contrôle postérieur à la projection, qui abolit définitivement la censure préalable,d’ailleurs non prévue dans la loi actuelle, et consacre les tribunaux comme « espaces ouverts et médiatisés » à l’écoute des griefs, selon M.Saghiyé. De plus, et pour contrer l’arbitraire d’une Sûreté générale,« qui exécute des actions voulues par la caste politique, mais que celle-ci craint d’endosser » selon M. Saghiyé, le texte propose la création d’une commission formée principalement d’individus issus de la société civile, de sorte à garantir leur indépendance.
S’il est nécessaire de responsabiliser les politiques en matière de censure, il faut également prendre conscience de « la responsabilité qui incombe à la société civile », souligne Hanane Hajj Ali, directrice du théâtre Chams. Déplorant « l’hypocrisie, le culot, la négligence et la bêtise » des pratiques liberticides, elle a appelé à « une mobilisation sérieuse sur le terrain » pour le vote du texte de loi. Si, de son côté, Pierre Abi Saab,responsable de la page culture au quotidien al-Akhbar, a déploré « la régression agaçante et honteuse de cette agora de liberté et de lumière qu’est le Liban », il a relevé la coïncidence de la conférence avec l’interdiction de projection imposée il y a près d’une semaine au film Beirut Hotel, de la réalisatrice Danielle Arbid.

Une résistance, signée « Beirut Hotel »

Était d’ailleurs présente dans la salle la productrice du film, Sabine Sidawi,de la société de production Ourjouan, qui n’a pas manqué de confronter, à la fin du débat, le représentant de la Sûreté générale, dont la présence, sur invitation des organisateurs, était discrète, retenue, presque timide. Vive et spontanée, Mme Sidawi déplore, pour L’Orient-Le Jour, « l’imagination sans bornes de la SG qui fait dire au film ce qu’il ne dit pas ». En effet, Beirut Hotel, « une histoire d’amour sur fond lié à l’assassinat de l’ancien Premier ministre Rafic Hariri », est une « pure fiction, qui ne fait aucune allusion politique », insiste-t-elle, exemples à l’appui. Confirmant la volonté de l’équipe du film de déférer l’affaire devant les tribunaux, « parce que nous ne nous plierons pas à leurs conditions », Mme Sidawi a insisté sur la symbolique de cette démarche, par rapport à une société dominée par « une sorte de terreur mutuelle,nourrie par une théorie du complot obsédante et une crainte continue du regard de l’autre », une société qui finit par trouver dans la censure un abri.
Il convient de noter que la Sûreté générale évoque une « menace à l’ordre public » pour justifier officiellement l’interdiction de la projection du film.
Si la journaliste Aline Farah, représentant Maharat, a insisté sur « notre volonté de communiquer à l’opinion et aux autres acteurs de la société civile l’essence de notre travail », c’est surtout une mouvance de solidarité qui aura surgi hier, parmi des acteurs obstinés à s’exprimer et à se faire entendre.

DUBAI: (...) With 10 feature length films projected over three programs, Lebanese filmmakers were unusually well represented at DIFF this year. Perhaps because DIFF’s juries feted two of the Lebanese docs in competition, while the other two were locked out of the winners’ circle, these four works prompted a visceral debate – at least among some Lebanese at DIFF.

(...)Complicating this situation is the fact that still more Lebanese documentaries – which in another year, or another festival, might have been included in a competition line-up – were projected in the festival’s non-competitive Arabian Nights panorama.

“Che Guevara Died in Lebanon” (2011), the debut feature of Christina Foerch Saab, is a sweet-natured biography of her husband Ziad, a one-time fighter with Lebanon’s Communist Party who, like so many leftists this century, has taken to re-evaluating his belief system. It’s an often-touching work that draws obvious comparisons to Maher Abi Samra’s 2010 “We Were Communists,” without being in any way derivative of that work.

More challenging is Wissam Charaf’s debut feature-length doc “It’s All in Lebanon.” This media study relies largely upon archival images drawn from a handful of Lebanese television stations – all owned and operated by different political parties in the country – complemented by the commentary of several figures, most notably Lokman Slim, co-founder of the Haret Hreik-based cultural institute UMAM Documentation and Research.

The film analyzes the ideal types that have been projected into the Lebanese public since the end of the country’s Civil War. At one extreme are the Lebanese music videos that encouraged Lebanese to simply ignore their difficult reality – that, as Charaf notes in his voiceover, the civil war has not really ended. At the other extreme were the public relations videos of Al-Manar Television, which promoted an ever greater attachment to and recollection of the past. This business has only been complicated by the Lebanese media response to the 2005 assassination of former Premier Rafik Hariri.

All these works are worth finding, whether you’re Lebanese or not.

A new documentary film seeks to find out where Lebanon is heading

Dubai: Where is Lebanon heading? A new documentary film, which premiered at the Dubai International Film Festival, sought to ask this on Sunday. Directed by Wissam Charaf, It's All in Lebanon traces the evolution of the country from the end of the Civil War in 1990 to the present day.

Using mostly archival footage and soundbites by people from various backgrounds, Charaf, a former journalist, built his narrative via what he called the three main players in post Civil War Lebanon: the late prime minister Rafik Hariri, the Hezbollah party and the pop music industry.

"As a journalist covering post-war Lebanon, there was a wealth of stories. There was so much happening politically and in the evolution of the society," Charaf told the audience after the film's screening.

"The political propaganda was on overdrive, each relaying their messages while at the same time the entertainment industry was showing a positive and glamorous side of the country and selling dreams. It was interesting to say the least."

The 62-minute film, which includes extensive footage from Al Manar, the Hezbollah affiliated television station, and Future TV, which was founded by Hariri in 1993, also took a scathing look at the state of the media industry.

"Today the media in Lebanon is not really a media - it's like a propaganda machine… it's like a horror movie," said Charaf. "In contrast, there is hope in our movies, there is beauty."

The music industry, led by three of Lebanon's biggest pop stars - Haifa Wehbe, Nancy Ajram and Elissa - are portrayed as visions of hope of a country devastated by and the constant threat of war.

Hind Mezaina, an Emirati blogger and photographer who was at the screening, said she could relate to Charaf's message of hope but with an underlying fear.

"I think the current state of Lebanon is very well-portrayed," says Mezaina, who blogs on theculturist.com. "I liked how it touched upon the frustration of the media and how things are controlled and manipulated. I could relate to how he feels because much of the media is similar across the Middle East.

"There were also interesting observations being made by how Lebanon, which used to be referred to as ‘the discotheque of the Middle East', used to lead the charge in demonstrations and change. Yet now that there are things happening in the Arab World, nothing is happening in Lebanon.

"But there is also hope and that despite the tensions, people are still carrying on. Still there is also an underlying fear that things will start up again soon," Mezaina added.

Interchange workshop

Dubai International film Festival, TorinoFilmLab and the European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs (EAVE) present Interchange, the feature film development and co-production workshop.

The programme is for teams of writer/director and producer from the Arab world or Europe that are working on a feature-length fiction film. The workshop is also open to three trainee script consultants from the Arab world.

The aim is to build cooperation between film professionals from Europe and the Arab countries. 12 teams will be selected for 2 residential 5-day workshops, one in Torino (Between May and June 2012) and another in Dubai (In December.

Twice a year Movies that Matter provides small grants to promote screenings of human rights films all over the world. Last month 15 new projects were selected, four of which are presented here:

Next week, the first-ever Queer Film Festival in Turkey will be held in Ankara. In Cambodia, community- and film-based outreach activities are organised of the documentary film We Want (u) to Know.
In the course of 2012 a series of screenings will take place in Iraq of the documentary “A Handful of Ash”, as a tool to raise awareness about the harmful effects of female genital mutilation.
In Ecuador a mobile festival will be organized in different Amazonian cities, screenings documentaries about the rights of indigenous peoples.

On 10 December 2011, International Human Rights Day will be celebrated all over the world. On this occasion, and in partnership with Movies that Matter, 35 Netherlands Embassies and Consulates are organizing human rights film screenings.

The International Call funding initiative was created to give United States audiences access to international programming and voices on American television. This fund is only accessible to independent producers but not U.S. citizens nor residents of the United States.

This funding is for production and post-production funding only, for international producers and filmmakers making documentaries with international content. However, they do not provide research and development funding in this Call. In addition, former applicants are welcome to apply again with the same project or an entirely new one.

San Francisco, CA - October 20, 2011 - In its continuing effort to promote original filmmaking by individuals from around the world, the Global Film Initiative is pleased to announce the Winter 2012 cycle of its feature film production grants program. Applications will be accepted until January 15, 2012, and decisions will be announced in March 2012.

Global Film Initiative production grants are awarded twice a year, in winter and summer, to filmmakers whose work exhibits artistic excellence, accomplished storytelling and cultural perspective on daily life. Funds received through the Initiative's Granting Program are used to support completion of film production, and to subsidize post-production costs, such as laboratory and sound mixing fees, and access to modern editing systems.

The Global Film Initiative will award production grants of up to $10,000 each to select applicants during its winter granting cycle. These funds are made available following the Initiative's evaluation of an applicant's completed screenplay and early film-footage, and may include a pre-sale option for exclusive U.S. distribution of an applicant's film by the Initiative.

Individuals may submit more than one film for consideration per granting cycle but please note that only applications from qualifying countries or regions will be considered and that production grants are not available for documentary or short films.*

The Global Film Initiative strongly believes in supporting narrative storytelling traditions from around the world and invites all qualified applicants to submit their work for granting consideration.

DOCmed est un programme de formation sur 3 ans, destiné aux professionnels du secteur documentaire ayant un projet apte pour une coproduction internationale.

Chaque année, 10 professionnels seront sélectionnés pour participer au programme DOCmed. Ils seront encadrés par des experts et tuteurs expérimentés et actifs dans le champ de la production et du financement du documentaire.

Ce programme est une initiative de Beirut DC (Liban), Eurodoc (France), Doc à Tunis (Tunisie) et en association avec ARTE France

L’appel à projet pour documentaire est lancé, la date limite de réception des dossiers, est fixée au 31 octobre. 10 projets seront sélectionnés par un jury de professionnels. Les producteurs seront invités à l’atelier de formation.

Online Film submission is now activated and you can start entering films for the programme there.

Film submissions can only be made via online registration from September 20 until October, 31st (feature length films) and November 14, 2011 (short films).

The new Bertha BRITDOC Fund for Journalism is an international film fund dedicated to supporting long form feature documentaries of a journalistic nature.

They are looking for films that break the important stories of our time, expose injustice, bring attention to unreported issues and cameras into regions previously unseen.

Funding for "Energy Security" documentary available

A coalition of leading European NGOs is looking to produce a campaigning documentary film. The available funding is EUR 25.000.

The coalition, which campaigns on the subject of energy security, poverty reduction and attainment of the Millennium Development Goals, wants to realise on e project that will be used to aid their advocacy and inform the general public about the other faces of the debate over “energy security”.

Bertha BRITDOC

The Bertha BRITDOC Connect Fund is the first European-based outreach and engagement fund, and is open to filmmakers from around the world.

Films have inspired people to engage and to act. They have led to changes in law, policy and practice. They have led viewers to question the status quo and to care more about their communities and the world around them. They have affected the way people give and/or invest money.

But for a film to achieve all this, it needs a structured outreach and audience engagement plan, and the capacity to implement it.

The next round closes at 6pm UK time on January 31st 2012. There will be no deadline extensions.
